Alaska Summer Shootout, produced by Alaska Basketball Academy, is the state’s premier high school team camp.
Featuring 60 teams, this 5-day camp is packed with 270 games,
and that’s before the renowned 2 Minute Tournament on the final day.
This year’s Guest Clinicians are California Oaks Christian Head Coach Mark Amaral and UAA’s Ryan Orton.
They join the Academy’s Director Frank Ostanik to lead training sessions at a coach’s clinic.
With many opportunities to connect with other athletes and coaches from around the state, participants also enjoy an All-Star game where players compete against coaches and former players.
Here’s a current trend: many of the state championship teams start their offseason here.
Coach Amaral’s coaching career has spanned 33 years. Coach Amaral began working his way through the college ranks as an assistant at Carol College, Lewis & Clark St. College, Idaho St., and Montana Tech before taking the head job at Peninsula College, where he built a 60-31 record over three years.
Following his stay at Peninsula, Coach Amaral spent seven seasons as an assistant at UC Santa Barbara, two seasons at Colorado St., and two seasons at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo before spending seven seasons as an assistant at Pepperdine.
In 2018 Coach Amaral served as associate head basketball coach of the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in China.
In 2021 Coach Amaral took over as head coach at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California. This past season he led the Lions to a 20-9 record, an astounding improvement of 16 wins between his first and second years.
Coach Frank Ostanik just completed his 30th season coaching within the great state of Alaska. Over that time, Coach O has led the basketball programs at Kaltag, Northway, UAF, and Monroe Catholic. Over his time coaching in Alaska, Coach "O" has demonstrated a high level of passion for basketball and those who play basketball in Alaska.
Over the last 19 years Coach Ostanik has taken the Alaska Basketball Academy Team Camp from a successful camp with 32 teams to the most popular camp in Alaska, with as many as 66 teams attending from around the state.
Despite his inability to coach his team to a region championship and only one state appearance since being forced to play 4A by ASAA and their director, Coach "O" can still conduct a quality team camp and remains committed to ensuring a quality experience for all teams and coaches who attend.
