Day one of the 1A/2A tournament kicked off with the opening games for the sixteen 1A teams.
Defending 1A girls champion Lumen Christi was upset in the opening round 35-26 by the #11 seeded Napaaqtugmiut girls. Junior Brooke Schaeffer led the charge with a double double, 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The boys #1 seeded Kake (24-0) continued their winning ways, defeating #16 Emmonak 65-44. Kake has now won 58 straight games.
Day two will introduce this year's 2A competitors in the quarterfinals, with 1A teams that have advanced in their quarterfinals.
Day two of the 1A/2A tournament was quarterfinals day.
Top seeded 2A Hooper Bay had a 54-39 win over Unalaska. Hooper Bay senior Latrell Lake led with 21 points, and was on a mission Thursday. He made three 3’s in the game on his way to a Player of the Game award.. They’ll face #5 seed Metlakatla in the Semifinals.
The evening 2A games were tight finishes. 3rd seed Petersburg eked out a 44-42 win over the defending state champs, Ninilchik. On the other side, 2nd seed Cordova came out ahead 48-45 over Wrangell in a contest of several lead changes. Cordova will face Petersburg in the Semifinals.
Three of the four girls 2A quarterfinal games had wide margins of victory with the exception of one. #5 Unalakleet slipped by #4 Glenallen 41-38. They’ll face the defending state champion Tikigaq in the semifinals. #2 Metlakatla and #3 Nenana will battle it out on day 3.
Based on seeding, there were no surprises for the 1A boys quarterfinals. #1 Kake will face #5 Minto in the semifinals. #3 King Cove and #2 Scammon Bay will face one another in the other semifinal bracket. King Cove boasts a 21-0 record.
In the 1A girls, #11 ranked Napaaqtugmiut fell short against the 24-2 Fort Yukon squad 49-44. Napaaqtugmiut defeated the defending state champs Lumen Christi the day before. Klawock beat Buckland 48-45. Match one of the semifinals will feature #1 Klawock vs a 30-1 Newhalen team ranked #4. The next matchup will be #3 Fort Yukon against #2 Shaktoolik.
