Down nine entering the fourth quarter, Mt. Edgecumbe scored 26 points in the final eight minutes of regulation and forced overtime. Then they did it again. And again. Three overtime periods. One point. That's the 3A Boys championship.
Mt. Edgecumbe beat Barrow 98-97 in triple overtime Saturday to win the 3A Boys state championship at March Madness Alaska 2026.
Barrow controlled the first three quarters behind Alex Fruean, who finished with 46 points. The Whalers led 60-51 entering the fourth quarter.
Xavier Gundersen described the moment entering the fourth quarter down nine — the crowd going crazy for both sides. "When we locked in, it got quiet."
Then Edgecumbe's fourth quarter happened.
Guy Goldsberry and Kaden Herrmann each scored 10 points in the period — 20 of Edgecumbe's 26 fourth-quarter points between them. Goldsberry finished the game with five threes. With 3.8 seconds left and Barrow leading 77-75, Herrmann stepped to the line and made both free throws to tie it. Overtime.
Both teams scored nine in the first overtime. Fruean fouled out two minutes into the session — his third foul of the period ending his night with 46 points on the board. In the second overtime, both teams scored seven. Jaziah Tivao hit a three late to give Barrow a 93-92 lead. Herrmann made one of two free throws to tie it at 93. Barrow couldn't convert. Third overtime.
Elden Andrew hit a three early in the third overtime to put Edgecumbe ahead 98-95. Darren Salazar scored for Barrow to make it 98-97. Edgecumbe missed free throws that could have sealed it. Barrow's final possession ended with a blocked shot, a recovered loose ball, a timeout with 6.5 seconds left. The inbound came. The shot never did.
Goldsberry finished with 26. Herrmann added 24. Royce Alstrom contributed 18. For Barrow, Fruean's 46 points was one of the great individual performances in tournament history.
Some games are just games. This one was something else. Every player on that floor Saturday found out something about themselves that no practice, no regular season game, no semifinal could have told them. Three overtime periods under the biggest lights of their lives. The kind of pressure that either breaks you or builds you.
Ninety-eight to ninety-seven. Mt. Edgecumbe is the 3A Boys state champion.
Final: Mt. Edgecumbe 98, Barrow 97 (3OT) — 3A Boys Championship
